Rick from Soul Shack has a new eatery serving American Cheesesteaks. It is part of the new Willis Lane complex in the basement of 1 Willis Street. First off, the complex is a really nice place, and great to see Wellington buzzing again with a new Complex that serves food and is open on weekends and late evenings. I can see many Wellingtonians going to eat food and take advantage of the minigolf, games arcade and bowling.

However, let’s get to the food. I have always been impressed with Rick’s food. Back when he was in Porirua, he served Fried Chicken, BBQ meats, Waffles, and his Cheesesteaks. When he moved into the city, he concentrated on Fried Chicken and sometimes offered his Cheesesteaks. However, now it is time to offer them all the time but at a different location in the city.

I decided to try his Beef Cheesesteak and his Buff Chick n Beau. First off, his hoagie roll is really good. Wherever he gets It from, it is light, fluffy and loved the sesame seeds that a backed onto the roll. The beef steak is tasty and tender, and the cheese goes well with it. The only thing I would prefer would be some more onion mixed into the beef. With the Chicken n Beau, I preferred this one better. The chicken is really good and I loved the slight chilli kick. The white cheese sauce was good but I would have preferred more blue cheese in the sauce to give it a stronger taste.

Not surprising this place is a good addition to Wellington. Potentially, Wellington is starting to recover after the pandemic. Willis Lane will start becoming a teenage hangout, and it will be interesting to see if this place survives. Wellington needs a place like this, and having Rick’s Cheese Steak puts it in a good position.
