Last night in Taipei, I went to Shilin Market to have a look and grab some food. I went through the shopping/amusement park games section first and thought I was in the wrong place, but then, after walking a bit more, I discovered the street where all the food vendors were.

My first stop was to try some pepper buns. I tried one made of pork and was also impressed with this one. They also offered a beef one, pork and cheese and beef cheese. I do regret not going back and trying one with cheese, but I was too full to eat anymore at the end of the night. It was still delicious, a bit more juicy than the other one at Raohe Night Market and had juice spilled out slightly onto my clothes.

Next was trying some milk cubes from a lovely vendor. Cooked fresh to order, she even made the batter in front of me. It’s interesting how she cut the milk cubes into squares, and then after deep frying, they turn round. Overall, it is a lovely little snack, not too sweet and relatively easy to eat after letting it cool down.

Next was trying these Sweet Potato Balls. These were interesting, tasting like sweet potato (or what I call kumara) but chewy and hot. I also sprinkled some plum powder on top, which was an excellent addition to the balls.

Mushrooms were next on the list. The longest line of them all. These chunky mushrooms are grilled and brushed with this teriyaki sauce. I did find it interesting that the person did weigh the mushrooms post-cutting them to ensure they were exact. I got seaweed and rose salt sprinkled on top of mine, and overall, it was an adorable dish. I didn’t end up eating all of them as they were really filling, and I wanted to try other things.

The final stop was trying a Taiwanese sausage. My ignorance showed, and I just thought it was just a sausage. However, initially, when I received my sausage, I thought it was a sausage inside a sausage. However, it was a sausage wrapped in a glutinous rice sausage. I requested a garlic variety, and they added a garlic and spring onion sauce. Overall, it was super tasty and nice to eat.

Overall, a good market. Unfortunately, not all the stalls were open that night, but still a good market with good food. Honestly, I did prefer the Raohe Night Market, but both are still very good.
