I was in Dunedin, Otago, for a work conference, which didn’t officially start until the next day. After exploring the city a bit, I was ready for dinner. My friend was in the mood for Thai food, so I quickly Googled nearby spots and came across Asian Star Food, which had a solid 4.8 rating. The restaurant has a simple, typical Asian café vibe, and the menu offers a more affordable lunch selection than dinner options.
I decided to try the Stewed Pork Leg on Rice from their “Specials” menu, along with a Thai milk tea. The milk tea was delicious, with a rich, sweet flavour. It was served hot, and as the ice melted, it mellowed the sweetness perfectly, making for a refreshing treat.

When my dish arrived, I was impressed. The pork leg had been expertly stripped from the bone and was smothered in a flavorful sauce. The rice was moulded into a star shape, and one boiled egg cut in halves was on the side, which paired perfectly with the tender pork. The dish was delicious, though I realized I should have asked for some chilli sauce to add a bit more heat.
All in all, it was a great dining experience, and I can see why this place has such a high rating. My friend also really enjoyed their meal, and if I ever find myself back in Dunedin, I’ll definitely know where to go for a satisfying Asian meal.
