Honestly, I hadn’t planned much for places to eat in Tokyo. This spot was on my list to try, but I didn’t realise I’d be in the area until I checked my list while looking for food options. We had just visited the Skytree and Asakusa Shrine, which was perfect timing. This karaage chicken stall has an impressive 4.9 rating on Google and was highly recommended by a family member, so I was excited to try it. The store seems to be run by a lovely couple, and the husband, who is featured on the logo, is the one who cooks the chicken.

We ordered the wagyu beef croquette and some pieces of karaage chicken. Once our food was ready, they handed us a combined salt-and-pepper shaker to season it. The wagyu beef croquette was delicious—crispy and perfectly battered with no oily taste. The inside was a flavorful mix of beef, potato, and other ingredients, making it a satisfying snack. However, the highlight of the meal was undoubtedly the chicken. It was lightly battered, well-seasoned, and incredibly tender. Adding the salt and pepper enhanced the flavour even more. The chicken was piping hot at first, but it was delightful to eat once it cooled slightly.

While eating, I noticed a group nearby ordering the chicken wings. Seeing how good they looked, I decided to try them too. The wings arrived fresh and steaming hot, and I was warned to be careful with the heat. The karaage chicken pieces were easier to eat since they came with skewers, but the wings required using your hands and waiting a bit for them to cool down. After adding some salt and pepper, the wings were incredibly flavorful. I couldn’t decide which I liked better—the wings or the pieces. The pieces are more manageable if you’re looking for convenience, but I enjoy wings. They remind me of my grandmother, who used to say the wings were the sweetest part of the chicken, and I have to agree.
Asakusa Chicken soaks its chicken in a homemade salt marinade for at least 24 hours, giving it unique flavour and tenderness. Their recipe even won a gold award last year at the 14th Karaage Grand Prix. The couple running the stall was incredibly kind and funny and provided excellent customer service. This place is definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area—I highly recommend it!
