I had initially planned to visit Agathé in South Melbourne, but never quite made it there. Fortunately, I stumbled upon their smaller outlet in the Melbourne CBD. I walked past it the first time, peering into the window and thinking it looked worth a try, only to find out later it has quite a loyal following.

I intended just to grab one item, but ended up picking up two, and could have easily picked out more from their tempting selection. I went with the pandan baked egg custard in croissant dough and a cannelé (mainly because it was small and looked good).

Saying the pastries were delicious doesn’t quite do them justice. The pandan custard croissant was absolutely delicious. The pastry was perfectly flaky, and the custard inside was silky smooth with a rich pandan flavour. The cannelé had a beautifully crisp, caramelised crust with a soft, custardy centre that was just right, not overcooked, not too dense.

These pastries were truly exceptional. I honestly wish I’d discovered this place sooner. It might even be better than Lune, but that depends on your flavour preferences. I’ll be back next time I’m in Melbourne, and I’d especially love to try their almond croissants and more of their pâtisserie range.
