I stayed at the Eaton Hotel in Jordan, on the Kowloon side of Hong Kong. I was searching for a local-style breakfast—specifically, something from a traditional Chinese bakery. A quick Google search led me to Good Neighbourhood Bakery, a 9-minute walk from the hotel, with a solid 4.7-star rating. So off I went, braving the 30°C heat and high humidity for the sake of a good breakfast.
When I arrived, I actually walked right past it at first. From the outside, you wouldn’t immediately recognise it as a Chinese bakery—it was dimly lit and not exactly sparkling clean. But honestly, that didn’t bother me. These kinds of places often offer the most authentic experiences.

I ordered my three all-time favourite Chinese bakery items: an egg tart, a pineapple bun, and a cocktail bun. A fun little fact—these Cantonese pastries are often named based on how they look. The cocktail bun (雞尾包) translates directly to “chicken tail bun or chicken’s bum” in Chinese, while the pineapple bun (菠蘿包) gets its name from its crackly top, which resembles the surface of a pineapple (though there’s no pineapple in it).
The egg tart was still very warm, with the perfect temperature to eat it, and featured a delicate shortcrust pastry and silky custard filling—it was absolutely delicious. The cocktail bun was soft and fluffy, filled with a rich coconut-butter mixture, and slightly sweet. And the pineapple bun? Fresh out of the oven, pillowy soft on the inside with that iconic crisp, golden top—pure comfort food.
I didn’t intend to eat all three while walking through the streets of Jordan… but they were just too good to resist. This bakery is clearly a local gem, known mostly among residents and largely underrated by tourists.
Best part? All three items cost me just HKD $12—an absolute steal for such quality, freshly baked treats. Definitely worth the morning walk.
