A new Pacific Island eatery has opened in Kilbirnie, and I couldn’t be more pleased. As someone who really enjoys Pacific cuisine, it’s great to finally have a spot like this on this side of town—most are usually tucked away in Porirua or Upper Hutt.
What I love most about this place is its rustic charm. The layout is simple, featuring basic chairs and tables—many of which are clearly repurposed or recycled. There’s a laid-back, no-frills vibe, with big windows letting in plenty of natural light and minimal decor. Most of the food is kept warm in a bain-marie, with a few items in a pie warmer and others chilled in a large fridge. From what I can tell, the menu changes regularly, especially the protein options, which seem to rotate daily or at least weekly. You have to ask the staff what’s available or check their Facebook Page for their daily menu.

I’ve been twice now, and both times I’ve ordered the Chop Suey—it’s my weakness. Even though I know how simple it is to make, mine never quite tastes the same. I’ve also tried their lamb chops, potato salad, and honey-soy chicken, all of which were served on one of my visits. I did find them a bit under-seasoned, but nothing a sprinkle of salt couldn’t fix. The panikeke was also a highlight—definitely a treat and one I thoroughly enjoyed.

On my second visit, I stuck with the Chop Suey and added the lamb curry. The curry was delicious—flavourful, well-seasoned, and clearly slow-cooked. The lamb was tender and just falling off the bone.
Overall, I think this is a great new addition to Kilbirnie. Sure, the decor is basic, and I can imagine some people in the community might overlook it because of that. But to me, the food feels homey, traditional, and made with care. I also love how I can now easily get some panikeke. Neti’s has filled a real gap in the area, and I hope the local community gets behind them. The owner is lovely, and the entire place has a warm, Pacific feel to it.
