Found myself wandering around Ponsonby, checking out the shops, when I started to feel hungry. I opened up my Instagram bookmarks to see what spots I’d saved and came across The Sando Guy—something I’d bookmarked ages ago. It still looked great, so I decided to give it a try.
I arrived right at noon as they opened and ordered the Premium Beef Sando and Korean Fried Chicken. The wait wasn’t long, and I grabbed a seat at the picnic table—pretty much the only real spot to eat since it’s a food truck setup.
While I was waiting, I learned a few interesting things: they bake their own bread, and if you’re getting one of their dessert sandos, you’re better off waiting until the bread hits room temperature—the brioche softens and becomes even better.

When my order was ready, I started with the Korean Fried Chicken—straight into it while it was steaming hot (instant regrets, but worth it). The chicken was excellent. The sauce was flavourful, and while it didn’t coat every piece thoroughly, it didn’t matter—each bite still worked. The Premium Beef Sando was also delicious. The beef seemed like it had been deep-fried—similar to a beef katsu—and I loved that it was served rare. Everything came together beautifully in the toasted brioche. Super tasty.
All up, it’s a great little setup serving some seriously good sandos. The owners were also very friendly. While I was waiting, the place really started to get busy with the lunch crowd, including a few delivery orders. I’ll definitely be back—especially to try one of their fruit and cream dessert sandos.
