I suppose no trip to Hong Kong is complete without trying an egg waffle. There are plenty of places that make them, but one of the most popular—thanks to its Michelin Guide recognition—is Mammy Pancakes.

I finally decided to give their Mong Kok branch a try and ordered two flavours: the original and the banana and chocolate chip. One thing I really appreciate about Mammy is that they make each waffle to order, so they’re incredibly fresh, though it does mean waiting a little longer.

The original waffle was crispier than I expected, but still very good. The inside was fluffy, light, and not overly sweet—easy to eat and enjoy. The banana-and-chocolate-chip version was also excellent. The banana flavour came through clearly, almost as if it had been lightly puréed into the batter, and the chocolate chips complemented it perfectly.

Overall, these were solid egg waffles, and I can see why Mammy Pancakes remains so popular. That said, I personally preferred the egg waffles from Hung Hom Pancakes—but Mammy’s are much more convenient, with multiple outlets across Hong Kong.
