I was wandering around the basement floor of the Takashimaya department store next to Nagoya Station, looking for something to eat. Like most department store basements in Japan, it was filled with food vendors selling a wide variety of dishes. While walking around, I came across a sandwich shop making a variety of Japanese-style sandwiches, including the popular fruit-and-cream variety.

I decided to pick up a couple and chose the strawberry and cream and the mango and cream sandwiches. They had to be eaten by the end of the day, which I was more than happy to do.

Both sandwiches were really delicious, and I enjoyed them a lot. They were made with fresh fruit and real cream, which made a noticeable difference. The only downside was that the fruit was mainly on the display side of the sandwich, with very little on the back. I do wish the sandwiches were filled more evenly with fruit, as that would have made each bite better, rather than occasionally getting just bread and cream. That said, the strawberries were delicious—sweet and full of flavour—and the mango was just as enjoyable.

Overall, these were excellent sandwiches and a much better alternative to the ones you usually find at convenience stores. The price difference is quite noticeable, but that’s to be expected. The sandwiches also seemed very popular, with a line of people waiting to buy them.
