I wanted something a bit closer to home, but still something I can’t get back home, so I decided to head to Shake Shack. I do enjoy a good Shake Shack whenever I get the chance — unfortunately, that’s not very often since there aren’t any in New Zealand or Australia.
I ordered the ShackStack burger, which comes with a beef patty, cheese, lettuce, tomato, ShackSauce, and a deep-fried portobello mushroom stuffed with three types of cheese. I also got fries and their Hōjicha Shake, made with vanilla frozen custard, roasted tea, black honey, brown sugar jelly, whipped cream, and feuilletine.
As I mentioned in my Hong Kong review, I do feel that Shake Shack burgers have fallen victim to shrinkflation. The burger feels relatively small overall. That said, the ingredients are neatly layered, and visually it still looks like a well-constructed burger. The ShackStack was consistent with other times I’ve had it — the fried portobello mushroom filled with cheese pairs exceptionally well with the beef patty. The fries were also consistently good and nicely cooked.

What really keeps me coming back to Shake Shack, though, are the shakes — and this one didn’t disappoint. It was excellent. I loved the depth of the hōjicha flavour, which surprisingly paired well with the custard’s creaminess. I also enjoyed the little pieces of jelly in the drink, although they were slightly too sweet for my taste. It was a significant shake overall, but quite rich — I couldn’t finish it because it was so filling.
Overall, it was another solid dining experience. The food did take a little longer to arrive as the place was bustling, but at least I knew everything was freshly made, which is something I really appreciate about Shake Shack. Back in New Zealand, I’m not usually much of a fast-food eater, but Shake Shack is one of those places I’m always happy to make an exception for. But I do like myself a good Shake Shack burger.
