Great to see a new pizza-by-the-slice option in Wellington. Spizzico is a newcomer specialising in Roman-style pizza al taglio, with a range of varieties priced around $10 a slice. They also offer focaccia and Bocce-style pizza as alternatives to the usual slices. I hadn’t been to any of the previous eateries in this space and didn’t realise there was quite a bit of seating at the back, so if you’re after a quick bite with somewhere to sit, this is a good spot to keep in mind.
I ordered two slices: the Four Cheese, an ultimate cheese lover’s delight. A rich and melty combination of authentic Italian cheese. Perfectly golden, bubbly, and full of flavour, and their special Potato and Rosemary slice is topped with pancetta. A rustic Italian classic showcasing the natural harmony of earth and herb. Paper-thin slices of gold potatoes, cheese, rosemary and, of course, pancetta.

The slices didn’t take long to heat up and arrived piping hot. Both were very enjoyable, and I appreciated the subtle balance of flavours in each. I would have liked a little more gorgonzola on the Four Cheese to really bring out that distinctive tang. The potatoes on the Potato and Rosemary slice were sliced incredibly thin, and the pancetta added a lovely smoky note. That said, my cousin, who ordered only the Potato and Rosemary, felt it could have used a touch more salt to better enhance the overall flavour.
Overall, Spizzico is well worth a visit. I liked the thin crust and how it was both slightly soft and crisp, with a light, pleasant dough. I mention this because I had recently tried the pizza at Frolla Patisserie and Bakery in Miramar, where the base was much crisper and lacked texture. They noted this was due to their interpretation of Roman-style pizza, but compared with Spizzico, the two doughs are quite different—and personally, I prefer Spizzico’s. Finally, I also love that there was chilli oil that was easily accessible to their customers. Those little things, really make a difference at times.
