I decided to have a more traditional Singaporean breakfast today, so I headed to Ya Kun Kaya Toast on China Street, their oldest outlet. Ya Kun Kaya Toast is synonymous with kaya toast and butter, so I thought, why not try it?
When I arrived, it was moderately busy. I ordered their Option A set, which comes with kaya and butter toast, two soft-boiled eggs, and a coffee. I also ordered an iced Tea-C, since I wanted something cold to keep me going.
I waited a few minutes for my order to be ready, so I found a table and a seat. I also picked up some soy sauce and what looked like white pepper. Once my eggs and drinks were ready, I picked them up and then had to wait another minute or so for my toast.
While I waited for my food, I watched how everyone else ate their toast and eggs. They seemed to pour some soy sauce onto their spoon first, add it to the eggs, and then sprinkle on some white pepper. I thought that was pretty smart, so I did the same.
Once I had my whole order, I added some soy sauce and white pepper to the eggs, then broke open the slightly runny yolks. I dipped my toast, with its butter and kaya, into the egg yolk.

Man, what a combination.
Whoever decided to mix all these things together for breakfast was a genius. You get the richness of the butter, the sweetness of the kaya, and then the richness and umami from the soy sauce and egg. Yummy!
The coffee was good and not too sweet. The coffee here, though, tastes quite different from the coffee and roast we get back in New Zealand. Not at all bitter and quite a bit of sugar. The iced Tea-C was really nice and refreshing too. I really do like some canned evaporated milk, which doesn’t quite taste the same back home in New Zealand.
Overall, it was a really good breakfast. I loved the mixture of flavours from the soft-boiled eggs, kaya, butter and toast. It was a real experience and a very different way to start the day.
Would I go again? Most probably, especially if I were more of a breakfast person. But even if I’m not, this was definitely a breakfast worth trying.
