I have hardly had a reason to drive to Upper Hutt. However, I was going on a road trip to Hawkes Bay and on the way I decided to go via the Rimutakas and so decided to visit Jean’s Bakery. I have followed them on Insta for a while and was always interested in their pastries. I have always loved a good Almond Croissant, and I got introduced to them when I was really young as Pappa Bear use to manage A Taste of France a boulangerie in Wellington in the 1980s 1990s.
The shop is lovely and quaint and the inside is very cool, but the shop front is small. There are a few seats outside if you dare to sit on them during the Wellington Winter. One each of the different pastries is set out nicely so you know what they are selling and what they still have to sell. Of course, I ordered an almond croissant and I also got a Ham and Cheese croissant or what you might call a Croque monsieur croissant.
All I have to say is Bloody Hell. These croissants are good and bloody messy to eat. The pastry just crumbles with all that butter used in the dough. The ham and cheese are so good with nice thick pieces of champagne ham and the cheese, yum! The almond croissant is also so good. I feel these very well could be the best croissants in Wellington. The only problem is they are so far away for me to get them but also maybe that is a good thing.
