For my last lunch in Melbourne, I decided to try Soi 38, a place that has garnered quite a reputation and is beloved by locals. Despite its location in a car parking building, it exudes a unique charm that I found appealing.

However, I made the mistake of visiting during lunchtime and discovered they offer a limited menu, primarily consisting of noodle dishes. Undeterred, I ordered their Crispy Pork Noodles, served dry with flat egg noodles, some grilled pork balls, and lemon tea.

The lemon tea arrived first and was surprisingly delicious, although its unusual colour left me curious about its ingredients. The grilled pork balls were a highlight, with a perfectly blended texture and accompanied by a delectable sweet chilli sauce.

But the star of the meal was undoubtedly the crispy pork noodles. Served with a side of soup, the noodles were cooked to perfection, retaining a satisfying texture. The pork was flavorful, especially the crackling, and adding a lime wedge added a refreshing zest. Adding some lime and chilli flakes to the noodles elevated the dish to new heights of flavour.

Despite my initial disappointment at the limited lunch menu, I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and wished I had known to visit for dinner instead. The eatery’s unconventional atmosphere may deter some, but to me, it only adds to its authenticity. Soi 38 is definitely a must-visit spot in Melbourne.
