Another day and another adventure in Singapore in search of good food. This time, I wanted to try somewhere different for Hainanese chicken rice, so I chose Yan Kee, which was rated very highly on Google.
When I arrived, there was no line, and they served me almost immediately. I have to admit, this was slightly worrying! It seems like every highly rated food spot in Singapore has a queue, so seeing an empty stall made me wonder whether I had made the right choice.
I ordered a medium portion and chose a mix of roasted and poached chicken so I could try both.

Once I received my order, I found a seat and was actually surprised by the size of the dish and just how much chicken I got. I started with the chilli sauce, which was pretty good, and then tried some of their ginger sauce, which I also approved of.
I then moved on to the roasted chicken. Unfortunately, it wasn’t as tender as I expected and seemed ever so slightly overcooked. I was hoping the poached chicken would be better, but unfortunately, that wasn’t as tender as I had hoped either.
The rice was slightly more nutty than I was used to, which I actually really liked. It was also cooked slightly on the firmer side, but the seasoning was nice and added plenty of flavour.
However, when I put everything together- the chicken, rice, chilli and ginger sauces; I was actually left feeling a little disappointed. Given how highly rated Yan Kee is, I expected a much better plate of Hainanese chicken rice.
I don’t think I would recommend this one to others, especially when there are so many other places in Singapore serving Hainanese chicken rice to try instead. But, as always, judge for yourself!
