I have never been to Ortega for a meal and was excited to come especially for Wellington on a Plate as the set menu looked very appealing. My friends and I have talked about coming here numerous times but never did and Wellington on a Plate was a great opportunity for us to go. I also think all the other people that were there thought the say.
Pacific Oysters Served Natural with Sherry Vinegar, Ponzu and/or Battered with Remoulade
I and a friend order these on top of the set menu as we felt like having some oysters. We both chose to have one natural and the other battered I decided to have my natural oyster with the Sherry vinegar and it was beautifully fresh. My friend T cut it up so they could savour it but I did it in one gulp. I did however, cut my battered oyster up and I squirted some lemon on it, which was good, and then just tried some with the remoulade, but I enjoyed it with lemon and remoulade together. Overall the oysters were delicious.
Pan-fried prawn tails with garlic butter sauce, Wairarapa lemon and tagliatelle
This was beautifully presented and smelled divine. The prawn tales were fresh and big and the tagliatelle was fresh and handmade. This dish worked very well. It was just so easy to eat and did not taste to heavy and the taste of the lemon gave the prawns that extra lift. You also got bread with the dish and we ended up using up the bread to soak up the leftover sauce.
Fish Factory Kāpiti fish of the day in yellow curry with salad of beetroot, carrot, ginger, peanuts and tamarind
Also when this dish arrived it smelled divine. I had mine without peanuts due to being allergic to them. However, this did not deter from the flavours in the curry or fish. The fish was fresh and was very well cooked and the curry was not overpowering but had a nice kick to it. The tamarind gave a sweetness to the curry and the salad of slightly pickled carrot and beetroot just worked so well with the fish and curry.
Whittaker’s chocolate mousse
Wow, this was a standout. This dessert was outstanding. So much chocolate but a great way to end a fantastic dinner.
Overall Ortega was great and I totally enjoyed it. What I really like about Wellington on a plate is that the set menus are well priced and introduces you to different restaurants that you may not necessarily go to, and this was one of my places. I will definitely go back to Ortega and try their al a carte menu. The staff were very attentive and very accomadable for my table of four.
