Discovered this place through the local rag. The owners of Eat Street Food Truck and the original owners of Elements Cafe have taken over the premise of The Batch on Island Bay and have transformed and tidy it up to become Beach House & Kiosk. This place has been open since late November and already seems like a popular place to grab some food.
Maui decided that Buttercup, himself and I should catch up before school really starts again for another year. He decided that lunch was an appropriate time and I suggested Beach House & Kiosk. When we arrived this place was pumping with people everywhere. Luckily when we arrived there was no one really looking for a table. Even though we wanted to sit outside we could only get a table in side. However, once we had ordered we managed to move seats outside which was nice as it was a sunny day.
Breakfast Burger
Andouille sausage, bacon, kasundi, fried egg, caramelised onion, rocket, halloumi
When ordering this I also decided to add the Duck Fat Potatoes to my burger. The potatoes were beautifully cooked. They were very crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside. They were nicely seasoned and had some shavings of pecorino on them.
The burger looked really nice. The bun was grilled on the inside and was a brioche bun or a milk bun. Inside were good amounts of thickly sliced andouille sausage, bacon, caramelised onion and halloumi. They were all beautifully cooked and added to the burger. The egg yolk was just cooked enough that when you bite into it the yolk stayed in place (so no mess) and the kasundi, which is a tomato based pickled sauce was a perfect compliment. When you add it together this burger is really good. I did manage to eat it like a burger and it can be done as Buttercup dared me to, but after two bites, I decided to use a knife and fork.
Flat White
They use Supreme Coffee Beans here, which did not surprise me as so did Elements Cafe. The Flat white was nice but did lack the depth and darkness which Supreme Beans do lack usually.
Overall this place is really good. It is busy, but I do wonder what it will be like in the winter. The food is good and the service is very good as well. The seating capacity is roughly split in the middle between the inside and the deck, which is covered. However, the inside is very loud due to the acoustics of the room. On the deck you get a beautiful view of the Cook Strait on a sunny day and where else do you want to be when you go out for a bite to eat. I do want to go back and definitely try their soft shell burger as I liked their soft shell crab burger that they produced for 2016 Wellington on a Plate. Maui and Buttercup enjoyed themselves and liked the food as well.
