I had a really nice experience at Mamak that I decided to go back. Looking back, I not 100% sure why I went back as I had just come back from Singapore and had some great Malaysian food there but I went anyway. Mamak has always been rated highly as one of the best places of Cheap Eats in Auckland and I still wanted to know if it was as good as I had in 2014.
I went on a Saturday during lunchtime and it was rather quiet, but with some customers eating there. I decided to order the Spring Rolls and the Char Kuay Teow – Mee. The food came out rather fast and I was surprised to see how big the servings were. I loved the amount of chilli on the side and was interesting to get there crackers that added an interesting crunch to some of the noodles. I loved the mix of rice noodles and egg noodles but I thought it was slightly under-seasoned, which was a shame. The Spring Rolls were good and obviously housemade. They had a good flavour to it but also the sweet chilli sauce was a nice addition, which I usually don’t like having on my food.
Overall, for cheap eats, this place is still a really good place to eat. What I love about this place is the tables don’t really match and the seats don’t either. The service is adequate and I love how there is outside seating.
